THIS WEEK IN GAMING

Fantastic Fighting Game Fatal Fury is Back With a Deluxe Edition

Were you a fan of the early series? Today we are looking at a nostalgic game that is finally getting an updated version. Fatal Fury debuted on the Neo-Geo system back in the 2D fighting game peak of 1991. SNK has not released an official Fatal Fury game since 1999. Were you dropping dozens of quarters on those old arcade games in the day, or were you testing the boundaries of your friendships on the Neo-Geo system? If so, you might want to pre-order Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

What to expect from the Digital and Deluxe Editions. It will be available on April 24, 2025, but if you pre-order the digital version of the game, you can start playing three days earlier! Along with the digital game, you can order a physical Special Edition copy or a Deluxe Edition. Unfortunately, right now, the Deluxe Edition is a PS5 exclusive, while the other versions are available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Here’s what you can expect in each version:

  • Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Digital Edition includes 3-day early access and a DLC Terry Bogard skin based on Fatal Fury 2.

  • The Special Edition version gets the Terry Bogard skin plus the Season 1 DLC which includes five extra playable characters.

  • In the Deluxe Edition, you will receive the above bonuses, plus a collectors box, a Steelbox with a 2 CD soundtrack, stickers, and an art book with over 100 pages of new and classic artwork.

This game is packed with extras. The game itself, regardless of which edition comes with 17 characters to choose from, with both a mix of new and veteran fighters. You’ll also see five more appearing over the months with the Season 1 Pass DLC. There will be a standard fighting gameplay mode, with on and offline versus modes, an arcade mode, and an RPG mode. In that one, you can choose your player and explore South Town while earning XP from fights and customizing your character.

Ready to order your version of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves? Right now, Best Buy is accepting pre-orders with more retailers being announced in the coming days.

DEVELOPER INSIGHTS

We Could be in for a Treat by Revisiting Oblivion

What’s this, a new Elder Scrolls game before they release 6? So many of us have been waiting for a new Elder Scrolls game since Skyrim. Yeah, sure, Bethesda released Starfield, but it’s set in outer space! A far cry from Daedric princes, vampires, and OP assassin-archers who could one hit dragons out of the sky. Until 2026, 2027, 2028, or whenever they decide to give us Elder Scrolls 6, there’s another, ahem… Elder Scrolls rumor floating around.

It’s not official, but the leaks seem credible. Supposedly, and there have been no official reports from Microsoft or Bethesda about this, but Elder Scrolls 4, Oblivion Remake may be released this year. (Pause for applause) Mp1st reports that a former employee of game support studio Virtuos, accidentally let out that Oblivion is getting a “significant rework.”

Maybe we’ll see an Oblivion remake this year. While an Elder Scrolls 4 Remake rumor isn’t that new, the release date of 2025 is. When Microsoft and the FTC were hashing out the purchase of Activision/Blizzard, it was leaked that they were looking at releasing the Oblivion Remaster in fiscal year 2022. Obviously, that didn’t happen.

Is it a remake, rework, or a remaster? Well, it could go either way, but it’s leaning toward a reworking. According to Mp1st, the new version of Oblivion will utilize Unreal Engine 5 (Ooo, sparkly!) and will feature some reworks to gameplay tweaks to blocking, stamina, archery, sneaking, and hit reactions. Originally released in 2006, Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has not held up well, but still had a large cult following. But if the rumors are true, the remake or remaster, is bound to be a big hit. Crossing my fingers at least!

TECH SPOTLIGHT

Nvidia’s New Graphics Card Might be Hard to Find

A late holiday gift to yourself, maybe. Do you still have some Christmas cash burning a hole in your pocket? You might want to hold onto it a little longer because Nvidia’s 50 series graphics processing unit (GPU) will be launching soon. As always, when the latest tech gets ready to drop, people come out of the woodwork and start lining up. With rumors that the 50 series will be two times as powerful as its predecessor, it’s going to be a very hot commodity.

The classic issue of supply and demand. The problem is, this GPU is already going to be hard to find before it’s even released. The supply of the 5090 is extremely limited, and only a few, hand-selected retailers will offer it upon release. Nvidia is trying to remedy the situation, but they will have to stagger releases to certain stores until supply catches up with the demand.

The scalpers are hiding in the alleyways. That brings on a whole other problem. Remember the Tickle Me Elmo days? No? How about when the pandemic was just starting to set in, and people were stockpiling hand sanitizer, and reselling it for $50 or more for a normally $1 bottle? Yep, that’s likely to happen here too, so keep an eye out and hold on to your hard-earned cash. The Nvidia 5090 is set to retail at an MSRP of $1,999 each. While that is a steep price, when the scalpers get their hands on them, you can guarantee the price will get much steeper.

It might be prudent to wait a few months. If you’re lucky enough to be one of the first to get your hands on it, don’t forget to invite me over for a test showing! If not, I’d suggest waiting until the supply catches up so you don’t overspend on it. Remember those $50 bottles of hand sanitizer? They’re back down to a reasonable $2 to $3.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

But the Movie Vampire Made me do it!

Real vampires don’t sparkle, yeah, I said it. Vampires are on the big screen once again and these don’t sparkle! Since Bram Stoker brought the blood-sucking Dracula to the printed page hundreds of years ago, horrorphiles have been obsessed with vampires. They can be seductive, absolutely terrifying, charming, and an amazing trope for video games. From Castlevania to BloodRayne, there are plenty of vampire slaying games to choose from.

Maybe you sympathize with the lonely Vamp. But what if you’d rather play the bad guy, and channel your inner blood-sucker? Enter Cabernet, the (excuse the pun) “fang-tastic” indie game from Party for Introverts. If the company name itself doesn’t get your bat-senses tingling, then maybe the game itself will.

Not your typical blood-sucking good time. Instead of violent combat, and screaming hordes of frightened humans running in all directions, Cabernet is more about the actions and consequences of your choices as a vampire. The game is set in the Gothic era 19th century, and you are a new vampire named Liza. After your funeral, you find yourself emerging from a dark cell into an opulent party filled with the upper echelon of vampire society. From there you can work on your skills from turning into a bat to using your undead charm to change people’s minds.

It’s not as wholesome as you may think. While this may sound like a slightly dark Jane Austen-type game, you are a vampire after all, and your main desire is to fulfill the need to consume lots of human blood. This game is not a quest for a proper gentleman, but a quest to sate the growing thirst for hemoglobin.

Sink your teeth into the demo, and put it on your wishlist. If moody, gothic, dark, stunning art is your style, and if you’re looking for a different type of vampire game, I encourage you to seek out Cabernet. It has not been released yet, but you can play a demo to get you in the mood. Cabernet is set to come out this year and it looks positively delightful!
